Workshops

Tools to Bring:  In most cases, everything necessary to complete a project will be provided for you for each Workshop.  If there are additional supplies or materials required, they will be listed in the Workshop Description and/or you will be provided with a list at the time of your registration.  Snacks and bottled water are supplied with each Workshop.

  • Basic Craft Kit (BCK) – craft mat; scissors; paper trimmer; heat gun; favorite wet adhesives; ink blending tools; distress inks (Vintage Photo, Tea Dye, Black Soot); ruler; pencil; paper or small notebook
  • Advanced Craft Kit (ACK) – everything from the Basic Craft Kit above, but also includes X-Acto knife; cutting mat; brayer; bone folder; water spritzer or mini mister; moist towelettes or baby wipes; wooden toothpicks; sanding block or emery boards; Crop-A-Dile; stapler; tape runner or glue sticks; pop-up dots.

Please note that photos of any Workshop project as seen on the Website, Blog, Facebook, or other social media may vary from the actual project.  As well, project samples may also vary from actual projects.  While we do our best to provide students with materials needed to create projects as they’ve been depicted, these revisions may be required due to changes in product or availability of products from manufacturers, and are outside our control.  It may also become necessary for a Teacher to alter the design of the actual project to accommodate these changes.

“BYOP Tri-Fold Folio Album” Workshop with Sherry Bamsey

Thursday, September 14, 2017           10:00am – 2:00pm            Cost: $25.00

Join Sherry as she brings you the last of her folio Workshops in her BYOP Series.  This is another quick and easy project that’s perfect for those times when you have a limited number of photos.  All the necessary materials to build a tri-fold folio will be supplied in your project kit, ready for you to decorate with your favorite patterned paper.  Your finished folio will be 8-1/2″x5″ with a 9-page waterfall with space to hold 18 – 4”x4” photos.  Your folio will feature flaps designed to hold 4 – 4”x6”photos on each side.  To decorate your finished folio, you’ll need at least 8 sheets of your favorite 12″x12″ papers (paper used in sample is an old Paper Studio collection from Sherry’s stash.)  As with all of Sherry’s exciting Workshops, you’ll want to make your reservations early because seats sell out fast!

Supplies to Bring:  Basic Craft Kit (BCK), including craft sheet; paper trimmer; scissors; ScorTape (1/2”, 3/8″ & 1/4”); your favorite wet adhesive; tape runner; Crop-A-Dile; corner rounder; SCOREBOARD; bone folder; and your favorite pattern papers for decorating (see above).  All other supplies and materials will be supplied.

“ATC Trade & Swap”

Thursday, September 14, 2017           6:00pm-8:00pm          Cost: $NO CHARGE

ATCs, or Artist Trading Cards, are all the rage!  Create 15 cards at home at your own pace, on your own schedule . . . all the same or each one different . . . based on your choice of four different themes.  Then join us at this monthly NO CHARGE event and have fun as you trade with other artists.  Pick just 1, or mix-and-match from 2, 3, or all 4 themes, but start “thinking big in a small way”.  From experienced to novice, you’ll definitely want to see what it’s all about for yourself!  Come and share with others, or just stop in and see what’s going on with other artists, ask questions, share information, have fun, or simply become inspired!  Call for more details, but we look forward to seeing you there!

“Clutter Happens” Workshop with Julie Harden

Supplies to Bring:  You won’t actually be making a layout, so no tools will be needed, but please bring enough photos for a two-page layout.  All other supplies and materials will be supplied.

“Zombies ‘n More Zombies . . . Oh, Yeah!” Workshop with Pollie Coleman

Who’s ready for Halloween?  Join our very own Queen of Halloween as she brings you another project to sink your teeth in!  In this Workshop, you’ll take your mixed media skills to the creepy side, enhance your techniques using texture paste, and layering fun items such as texture boulders, pebbles, and sand, as well as starburst sprays and adding highlights.  Work on your embossing techniques with the die cut zombie and dust off your Shrinky Dinks skills by creating all sorts of spooky characters.  Lastly, learn how to turn those Zombies and spooky characters into a puppet show to create a one-of-a-kind piece that everyone will love!  Everything you’ll need to construct your project will be available in the Workshop, but if you have anything special you’d like to add, please feel free to bring it with you.  SEATING IS LIMITED so make your reservations early to be sure to save your seat for this chilling adventure!

“The Coffin Express” Workshop with Pollie Coleman

“Halloween Junk Journal” Workshop with Gayl Staffler

Welcome to a full day of crafty Halloween fun!  In this Workshop, follow along with Gayl as she shares many new techniques that we guarantee you’re going to love!  She’ll provide paper that she’s prepared in advance for your book, but she’ll take the time to walk you through the dying process step-by-step that she used.  It really takes coffee dying to a new level!  You’ll arrange your pages in the order you want, then stitch and bind your book for a clean finish.  Once that’s done, you’ll spend time learning a variety of design techniques that make this book unique and special.  Techniques you learn in this Workshop will work well in all future projects you do!  Your finished book will be filled with several spots to add tags and embellishments, so if you have anything special you’d like to add, please bring it.  Make your reservations early to be sure to save your seat for what’s sure to be a fun Workshop!

“Mixed Media Junk Journals” Workshop with Nicole Austin

Saturday, October 28, 2017           10:00am – 1:30pm            Cost: $55.00

Come and play as you create a beautiful, unique mixed media junk journal with a custom canvas cover and fill it with an explosion of colorful, handmade collage paper notebooks!  You’ll create our own pages using an assortment of our favorite scrapbook paper for the covers and vintage/ledger/grid/unique/recycled paper for the inside pages.  You can use the extra notebooks as inserts in your traveler’s notebooks/ planners, perfect for your purse for list-making or in your art bag for art journaling on-the-go!  You’ll also learn a variety of techniques and explore different media to create your own, beautiful junk journals!  You’ll also explore how to create a mixed-media inspired art journal spread in your completed journals!    Nicole with have paints and brushes, oil pastels, stencils, stamps, sponge daubers, Gelli plates, rollers, spray inks, long-arm stapler, and a variety of recycled/vintage/ledger/grid paper for everyone to share, but if have your own, definitely bring it!  Make your reservations early because SEATING IS LIMITED and as in Nicole’s previous Workshops, spaces are expected to fill quick!

Supplies to Bring:  Craft sheet; 12″x9″ piece of canvas for your journal cover (gesso one side before Workshop, if possible); an assortment of your favorite 12″x12″ scrapbook papers for your notebook covers (bring as many as you’d like to make, but at least 4); paint pens (for writing and/or decorating your pages {Nicole recommends Sharpie water-based markers in an assortment of colors and sizes and Dylusions for detail work}); 1-yard elastic cord in your choice of color; about 18″ decorative ribbon or thick yarn; paper trimmer; scissors; corner rounder punch; baby wipes; awl; ruler; and bone folder.  Optional Supplies:  If you’d like, bring your favorite colors of spray inks, paints, or other types of paper to use to fill your journals.  All other supplies and materials will be supplied.

“3-D Mixed Media Collage Canvas” Workshop with Nicole Austin

Saturday, October 28, 2017           2:00pm – 5:30pm            Cost: $55.00

Join Nicole as you get creative and messy while making an original work of art in the process!  Nicole will show you how to create a beautiful mixed media background using a variety of her favorite supplies and techniques to emphasize and highlight your focal image.  She’ll also show you how to create gorgeous, layered, colorful collage art paper that you will use to collage onto your 3-D shapes and make them jump off the canvas!  Nicole will have a variety of paints and spray inks, oil pastels, brushes, Gelli plates, rollers, and recycled/vintage/ledger/grid paper, and pattered tissue paper for everyone to use and share, but if you’d like to bring your own, definitely do!  Make your reservations early for this fun, new Workshop because SEATING IS LIMITED and spaces are expected to fill quick!

Supplies to Bring:  Craft sheet; two substrates (canvas, wood panel, and/or Gessoboard) {Nicole’s samples are 6:x12″ canvas & 8″x8″ Gessoboard}; two large wood or chipboard shapes that fit your substrates (i.e., angel, princess, bird, tree, heart, etc.; something that will be a focal image, but not take up the whole surface {it’s okay there’s paint or images on them, you’ll be painting/collaging over them}); scissors; matte gel medium; sponge brush; baby wipes; X-acto knife; and self-healing cutting mat.  Optional Supplies:  If you’d like, bring any favorite colors of spray inks, paints, or papers for collaging.  All other supplies and materials will be supplied.

Supplies to Bring:  Basic Craft Kit (BCK), including craft or nonstick sheet; scissors; apron; bone folder; cork back metal ruler; roll of paper towels or old rags; permanent black ink pad (only if you have one); container for paint water; 1″ to 2″ paint brush for glue and paint (Kelly suggests chip or bristle brushes), as well as a few smaller, detail brushes; your favorite glue sticks (large glue sticks will last longer); roll of waxed paper or an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don’t want to use all of your waxed paper); small selection of your favorite collage ephemera*; and any catalogs with thick papers or anything with thick/heavy paper that you’d want to use as a journal (Kelly suggests old mailers, college brochures, nice catalogs, etc.  Kelly will have some to use, but some people like to bring their own stash to use up.).  All other materials and supplies will be provided.

In this special Workshop, you’ll work quick and fast, without judgment, the idea being to keep your inner critic silent.  You’ll create a series of pages that are unique to you while learning a variety of new layering techniques involving collage, acrylics, markers, stencils, stamps, and more.  After some time spent creating this way, you’ll step back and think about your pages.  You’ll learn to look and process your pages with new eyes.  You’ll then rework your pages into all new original journal pages.

“Untold Stories” Workshop with Kelly Kilmer

This journal is the ultimate in play.  Kelly tells us that she’s always looking for new ways to revitalize her favorite techniques.  Think lush layers of paint, paper, tape, stencils, pen work, and more all bound into little bundles of creativity.  You’ll start the Workshop by creating rich layers of painted pages.  You’ve only just begun as you step back, revisit your pages, and start to think about how you can assemble them into books.  Before the tearing and the binding begin, you’ll go through and collage your pages (Kelly will show you how to collage them so that when you fold and assemble them you will have pages ready for you to work on.)  After you’ve finished assembling your journal, you’ll step back again and learn techniques for on the go or art journaling using minimal supplies.

“Visual Journal Pages as Narrative” Workshop with Kelly Kilmer

Where do you start when you put pen to paper?  How do you translate what’s in your head to your visual art journal pages?  How do you combine the visual with the written word?  Learn to combine paper, paint, and pen to create visually expressive and unique journal pages.  In this Workshop, you’ll learn a plethora of layering techniques using not only your pens and markers but also paint, paper, and more.  Think that you know what there is to putting your heart onto paper?  Think again.  Kelly first developed this Workshop to challenge herself and now she’s challenging you.  Bring your journal and supplies listed below (Kelly will have plenty of art supplies to share because she doesn’t travel light!) and be prepared to spill out onto the page.
