Workshops

Tools to Bring:  In most cases, everything necessary to complete a project will be provided for you for each Workshop.  If there are additional supplies or materials required, they will be listed in the Workshop Description and/or you will be provided with a list at the time of your registration.

  • Basic Craft Kit (BCK) – craft mat; scissors; paper trimmer; heat gun; favorite wet adhesives; ink blending tools; distress inks (Vintage Photo, Tea Dye, Black Soot); ruler; pencil; paper or small notebook

“Abstract Collage Backgrounds” Workshop with Nicole Austin

Saturday, June 10, 2017           10:00am-1:30pm            Cost: $45.00

Come and play as you create abstract backgrounds in your art journals using a variety of materials and techniques.  Your finished pieces will be able to stand alone as abstract works of art or you can further add to them using your favorite quotes or images.  You’ll start with a blank page in your art journal, then add colorful marks with oil pastels, spray inks, and stamps.  The second layer involves collage (using unique paper that you’ll create in the beginning of the Workshop as an exercise to loosen up your creative side!) and more marks with acrylic paint.  A final layer (if you choose to complete in the Workshop; some might want to make several backgrounds to use as inspiration for later) might include adding an inspirational quote, “word of the year”, photo, collage, or stenciled image.  You’ll also explore how to work with pages in your journals where you feel “stuck” or feel like the page just isn’t “working.”  In fact, if you have a journal you’re already working in or using to clean off brushes or extra paint, even better!  Nicole loves to start with a page that already has random marks and paint, so if you want, you can do a little “homework” and come with a few pages already started!  But no worries, Nicole will also be demonstrating how to start from scratch and conquer the fear of the blank page.  Nicole will have all sorts of stencils, stamps, Gelli plates & rollers, acrylic paints (black, white, red, yellow & blue), spray inks (blue, black & red), mark making tools, and so much more for you to include in your journals to personalize them how you’d like.  Make your reservations early because SEATING IS LIMITED and spaces are expected to fill quick!

Supplies to Bring:  Craft sheet; any size Art Journal (something with mixed media paper; Nicole will be working in an 11″x14″ Strathmore Mixed Media Journal and a Dylusions 9″x12″ Art Journal); a few spray inks in your favorite colors (Nicole suggests Dylusions, DecoArt Media, Mr. Hueys, or Hero Arts); white paint pen (like Liquitex or Sharpie); glue stick; baby wipes; and scissors.  Optional Supplies:  If you’d like, bring any favorite colors of paints and paint pens, or any collage materials you already work with or would like to add as a focal image.  All other supplies and materials will be supplied.

“Luscious Layered Portraits” Workshop with Nicole Austin

Saturday, June 10, 2017           2:00pm-5:30pm            Cost: $45.00

Nicole loves to play with a variety of media in her art journal to build up beautiful, colorful, complex layers using oil pastels, watercolors, and paints through stencils.  Each could easily be called finished works of art and left alone – but why stop there?  She likes to use these lusciously layered backgrounds as a backdrop to her wonderful portraits, loving the way the layers peek through each face, telling a unique story.  In this Workshop, Nicole will show you how she creates her own unique collage papers using a very simple set of art supplies and build layers in your journals with those same techniques.  You’ll explore how the different media work together to create different effects (resist with oil pastels and watercolors, stenciling techniques, how to layer collage, etc) and work on multiple surfaces to keep your creative momentum going (basically, you’re going to spread out and get messy!).  The last layer will be drawing the face and shading with oil paintsticks to create dimension.  This is where you’ll play with transparency as you allow some of the previous layers to “peek” through the face, while focusing on ways to make your portraits come alive.  No drawing experience necessary!  Your faces will be very simple and raw, but the results will be dramatic!  Nicole will have a supply of stencils, stamps, oil pastels, brushes, spray inks (blue, black & red), mark making tools, and so much more for everyone to share so you can personalize your journals how you’d like.  Make your reservations early because SEATING IS LIMITED and spaces are expected to fill quick!

Supplies to Bring:  Craft sheet; any size Art Journal (something with mixed media paper; Nicole will be working in an 11″x14″ Strathmore Mixed Media Journal and a Dylusions 9″x12″ Art Journal); watercolors; Stabilo pencil (black); Shiva Oil Paintstiks (also called Artist Paintstiks) in Titanium White and Yellow Ochre; white paint pen (like Liquitex or Sharpie); glue stick; baby wipes; and scissors.  Optional Supplies:  If you’d like, bring any other favorite colors of paints and paint pens.  All other supplies and materials will be supplied.
